Coeur d’Alene Mayor Jim Hammond Denies Speaking with Democrats about Gun Control — “…It Just Wouldn’t be Welcome Downtown”

Coeur d’Alene Idaho Mayor, Jim Hammond, speaking at the coeur d’Alene City Council meeting denied speaking with Democrats about gun control while he was a mayoral candidate.

In a response to a question posed by members of the Kootenai County Democrat Central Committee wherein a woman asks the then mayoral candidate “what can the city do, and would you and the city council be willing to stand, or make laws, or ordinances, pro whatever … to get guns off of our streets…”

Jim Hammond, the now Mayor of coeur d’Alene responded by reminding Democrats that in order to change laws regarding the Second Amendment, that “…we have to change that at the state level.”

The mayor continues: “… we have a really strong downtown association, and I think we might be better served by working with them, and make sure we just create an atmosphere where it just wouldn’t be appropriate and just wouldn’t be welcome downtown, or anywhere in ur community like that.”

Alongside making comments on gun control, which the Mayor now denies, Hammond also spoke on vaccinations and wearing masks, equating them to a “spirit of community,” adding that that was partly why he decided to run for mayor.

Just recently, Jim Hammond had police remove a woman from a city council meeting after she addressed the Coeur d’Alene Arts Commission’s attempt at erecting a giant ‘communist fist’ statue at the tax-payers expense.

Among other controversies, Coeur d’Alene mayor Jim Hammond has overseen the attempted removal of prayer before city meetings, with some members of the council referring to the tradition of invocations as “wasted time.”
