1 Dead, 1 Injured Following Attempted Burglary In Coeur d’Alene: Armed Citizen Stopped Would-Be Robber In His Tracks

If you want to break the law, do it in Spokane. Everyone in North Idaho is armed to the teeth.

EVERYONE.

Coeur d'Alene has been experiencing a surge in crime over the past several years. The latest incident occurred in the Target/Michael's shopping center parking lot on Canfield Ave, where a white male was shot and killed during an attempted burglary.

According to the Coeur d'Alene Police Department, the incident started when an older male citizen, who was armed with a handgun, witnessed the suspected burglar breaking into vehicles in the parking lot. The citizen confronted the burglar, who then got into a vehicle and started accelerating towards the citizen. The citizen ended up on the hood of the vehicle and fired several shots at the suspect, hitting him at least once.

The suspect's vehicle then crashed into a parked vehicle, throwing the citizen off the hood. When officers arrived on the scene, they found the suspect on the ground and immediately began giving medical aid to both the citizen and the suspect. Both were transported to Kootenai Health, but the suspect was pronounced dead after additional lifesaving efforts were unsuccessful.

The current medical condition of the armed citizen who stopped the burglary is unknown at this time.

This incident is just one example of the rise in crime that Coeur d'Alene has been experiencing over the past several years. In 2020, crime rose 37% year over year. Although data for 2021 & 2022 is not currently available, there has definitley been an uptick. According to local law enforcement officials, the city has seen a significant increase in crime, particularly in property crimes like theft and burglary.

The rise in crime has been attributed to a variety of factors, including the city's growing population, the opioid epidemic, spillover from Spokane, and a lack of resources for law enforcement.

The Coeur d'Alene Police Department is currently investigating the circumstances surrounding this latest incident and no further information will be released at this time.
